Four ways to avoid hotel phone charges:

  • Quickly hit the # key between calls instead of hanging up. That way you get a new dial tone and avoid being charged an access fee for a second call
  • If the hotel does not charge access fees for 800 number calls, call your long-distance carrier toll free and have its operator place the call.
  • If there is no answer after five rings, hang up to avoid being charged for an incomplete call.
  • Charge long distance calls to a credit card.

If you go on vacation for several days be sure and disconnect your automatic garage door opener. This will prevent someone on the same frequency from opening it and prevent entry by a thief.

Lost a used roll of film when on vacation? Next time put your name, phone number and address on a 3 x 5 card and take a picture of it.

Other helpful tips:

  • Be sure your name on your passport is the same on all your I.D. Security is very tight these days.
  • Check in a minimum of 1 hour before flight time for domestic flights and 2 hours for international flights.
  • Be sure to keep your glasses, medication, jewelry and any other very important belongs on your person. Even if your suitcases have locks, baggage handlers and others can gain access and remove valuables.
  • On any extended vacation, be sure to have prescriptions for medications you need for the trip. It is also a good idea to take a copy of your medications in case you need to refill them in another city or country.
  • If you are going overseas, take your ATM card for emergencies. Accepted almost all over the world, it is cheap insurance you can use in case a merchant does not accept a check or particular credit card.
  • Take zip lock bags of all sizes. They make ideal packaging for wet bathing suits, "leakable" bottles and more!
  • If you are on a tour bus, make sure you take bottled water. On some tours, bottled water is not supplied.
  • Take a copy of your passport including your picture and your itinerary exchange it with a travel companion. That way, in case you or your companion loose your originals, you will have a better chance of continuing your travels rather than waiting for new documents. And be sure to keep these copies on your person at all times too!
